Diabetes means too much sugar stays in your blood. High blood pressure means your blood pushes too hard against your arteries. Both can damage your body for years without you feeling anything.

Yon mesye ki chita ap tcheke tansyon l ak sik li lakay li. A man seated at home, checking his blood pressure and blood sugar.
Tcheke tansyon w ak sik ou lakay ou, epi ekri chak rezilta nan yon ti kanè. Check your blood pressure and blood sugar at home, and write every reading in a small notebook.

3 konsèy pou w evite konplikasyon 3 steps to avoid complications

1

Pa kite lajan oswa lang bloke w Don't let money or language stop your care

  • Mande pale ak yon travayè sosyal. Anpil klinik gen yon pri vizit ki depann de revni w.
  • Mande si gen èd transpò pou w rive nan randevou w.
  • Mande doktè a si gen yon medikaman jenerik : li koute mwens chè.
  • Ask to speak with a social worker. Many clinics have a sliding fee scale based on your income.
  • Ask whether transportation assistance is available for your appointments.
  • Ask your doctor for a generic medication — it costs less.

« Mwen pa pale anglè, mwen bezwen yon entèprèt kreyòl. » “I don't speak English, I need a Haitian Creole interpreter.”

Se dwa w. Entèprèt la gratis — mande l chak vizit. It is your right, and it is free — ask at every visit.
2

Pale ak doktè w sou tout remèd ou pran Tell your doctor about every remedy you use

Nou pa mande w bliye tradisyon w. Nou mande w pataje yo ak doktè w : We are not asking you to give up your traditions. We are asking you to share them with your doctor:

  • Te kannèl, lalwa, tizann, fèyCinnamon tea, aloe, herbal teas, leaves
  • Sèl sou tèt pou tansyonTraditional practices for blood pressure
  • Vitamin oswa siplèmanVitamins or supplements
  • Remèd san preskripsyonAnything bought without a prescription

Danje : de remèd ansanm ka fè tansyon w oswa sik ou desann twò ba. Danger: two remedies together can push your blood pressure or blood sugar too low.

3

Pran medikaman w chak jou — kenbe yon kanè Take your medicine every day — keep a notebook

  • Pa tann pou w santi tèt fè mal oswa tèt vire. Lè sentòm yo parèt, dega a ka deja kòmanse.
  • Achte yon ti kanè : ekri tansyon w, sik ou, ak lè w pran medikaman.
  • Don't wait for a headache or dizziness. By the time symptoms appear, damage may already have started.
  • Buy a small notebook: write down your blood pressure, your blood sugar, and when you take your medicine.

Pote kanè a bay doktè w nan chak vizit. Ansanm, n ap jwenn yon plan tretman ki fèt espesyalman pou ou. Bring the notebook to every visit. Together, you and your doctor will build a plan made for you.
